Welcome!

I am a phytoplankton ecologist currently working as a post doc in Uppsala (Sweden) and recently came back from two years at University of Georgia in Athens (US). Herein you will find updates on my previous and current research focusing on phytoplankton of all different … Continue readingWelcome!

The third temperature experiment

We are currently running the third temperature experiment in a year. This time we use an axenic strain of the coccolithophore Emilinia huxleyi and we grow it in three different temperatures; 15, 20, and 28°C. We will look at metabolites and gene expressions of the … Continue readingThe third temperature experiment

Synechococcus experiment

We examined endometabolite production and transfer to surrounding bacteria by the cyanobacteria Synechococcus growing under three different temperatures; 20°C, 24°C, and 28°C. They all grew perfectly and were nice and pink at harvest in late exponential growth phase. We sampled for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) … Continue readingSynechococcus experiment

Adapting Synechococcus to different temperatures

We have been growing the cyanobacteria Synechococcus at three different temperatures (20, 24, and 28°C) for many weeks now, tracking growth and planning for un upcoming experiment. Look at the picture and you will know where it grows fastest… So we now have three sets … Continue readingAdapting Synechococcus to different temperatures

An unexpected guest

We recently traveled along the Gulf Coast over the Thanksgiving holidays and the kids accidentally brought back a little friend. It is now called Bella and lives in a tank in our house. The kids are happy about their new pet and hopefully it want … Continue readingAn unexpected guest

JGI Funded project!

I am happy to share that we recently were approved funding from JGI for six different metabolomics and metatranscriptomics experiments! It will involve temperature acclimation of three different species of phytoplankton co-cultured with both laboratory strains of heterotrophic bacteria and natural communities. There is a … Continue readingJGI Funded project!

New paper out

We have a new paper out on phytoplankton diversity and how it varies across season and along a salinity gradient along the Swedish coastline. It is published in Scientific Reports and is a result of nice collaboration between SMHI, GU, and SLU.

New upcoming experiment

Exciting times ahead, we are planning for a new experiment within the next couple of weeks. We will use our temperature acclimated diatoms to feed a natural bacterial community and trace the labile carbon transfers. There are a lot of logistics around this experiment but … Continue readingNew upcoming experiment
